This novel was written in 1892 and is set in early America. Howells wrote many books in this genre. In this novel, we meet early on one of the central characters, a man called Northwich. He lives in a good, comfortable home but is now a widower, his wife having passed some years previously. We also learn that all is not as it seems with him and that he may have something to hide.
