The Greatest Short Stories of E. F. Benson- E. F. Benson

521 Pages

Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories._x000D_ This unique and meticulously edited collection includes: The Room in the Tower, and Other Stories_x000D_ The Room in the Tower_x000D_ Gavon's Eve_x000D_ The Dust-Cloud_x000D_ The Confession of Charles Linkworth_x000D_ At Abdul Ali's Grave_x000D_ The Shootings of Achnaleish_x000D_ How Fear Departed from the Long Gallery_x000D_ Caterpillars_x000D_ The Cat_x000D_ The Bus-Conductor_x000D_ The Man Who Went Too Far_x000D_ Between the Lights_x000D_ Outside the Door_x000D_ The Other Bed_x000D_ The Thing in the Hall_x000D_ The House with the Brick-Kiln_x000D_ The Terror by Night_x000D_ The Countess of Lowndes Square, and Other Stories_x000D_ BLACKMAILING STORIES_x000D_ The Countess of Lowndes Square_x000D_ The Blackmailer of Park Lane_x000D_ GENERAL STORIES_x000D_ The Dance on the Beefsteak_x000D_ The Oriolist_x000D_ In the Dark_x000D_ The False Step_x000D_ CAT STORIES_x000D_ "Puss-cat"_x000D_ There Arose a King_x000D_ CRANK STORIES_x000D_ The Tragedy of Oliver Bowman_x000D_ Philip's Safety Razor_x000D_ SPOOK STORIES_x000D_ The Case of Frank Hampden_x000D_ Mrs. Andrews's Control_x000D_ The Ape_x000D_ "Through"_x000D_
