This novel is set in Chicago and is a romance but also a Christian moral tale. The hero and heroine are Dennis Fleet and Christine. Dennis is romantically attracted to Christine, but she is cold-hearted and also, unlike Dennis, a non-believer. The Chicago Fire acts as a catalyst to move the engine of romance and belief along. Payson Roe (1838 - 1888) was a talented and popular writer who was also an ordained chaplain.
